Spiked dog collars are primarily used for different breeds of dogs and serve as a fashion accessory rather than an essential item. There are no specific recommendations for selecting the spiked dog collar, except that it must be of good quality, not press the animal’s throat and be removed easily.
It is better to prefer the wide leather spiked dog collars for larger breeds of dogs, i.e. the heavier the dog, the longer and wider a collar should be. In order for a leather dog collar to suit well, it is worth to choose the correct size. It is necessary to measure the girth of the dog’s neck and add 5-7 cm to the resulting number. The result of the sum will be the length of the collar (cm) which is optimal for your dog. The optimal width of the collar for a medium-sized dog is considered to be 2-3 cm, but if the dog has a thin neck, you should find a wider collar. It is better to pick a round collar for the dogs with long hair. The shape of it must resemble a cord.
The correctly chosen spiked dog collar will not bring the dog any harm, and only benefit. It will help the dog to be more disciplined and obedient on the street. Qualitative collar is properly fixed on the animal’s neck, so do not be afraid of negative consequences. It is also worth noting that for small dog breeds whose trachea especially sensitive, we recommend using harnesses that are not fixed on the neck, thereby pressing the larynx.
If you wish the collar to serve as long as possible and your dog not to feel any kind of discomfort, the collar should be regularly washed and cleaned. After a walk you should be sure to remove it, so the dog’s skin will breathe better, and wool under the collar is not erased.
Adaptation of the dog to the collar should be at a very early age. But while puppies are still small, instead of adult spiked dog collars, use a thin strap, which will resemble the strap watches, rather than the usual collar. Application of the pressing or half-pressing collars at an early age of the dogs is not allowed. Also it is worth to abandon the metal collars, as the fledgling neck of the puppy does not survive such a load.
Before you make the first walk on the street, the puppy should get used to the collar. Periodically, wear it on your neck and let it just to run around the apartment in such way. At first the puppy will resist and try to pull of itself the collar in all known ways. Gradually, it becomes accustomed to this alien object, which will decorate its neck during the walks.
